About

Documentingis how I see the world

I'm Christian Macías, a wedding photographer in Guadalajara and Zapopan, with a documentary and cinematic approach. From there I built Taking Moments Photography, dedicated to telling wedding stories with natural light and no forced direction.

My work has taken me to iconic venues across Jalisco —from the Templo Expiatorio to Hacienda Benazuza, from Tequila to Tapalpa— and to destinations like Riviera Nayarit, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico City, San Miguel de Allende, and Oaxaca. Internationally, I've documented weddings in Bolivia, France, Belgium, and Colombia.

I believe in photography as testimony, not direction. My work isn't to correct what's happening in front of me, it's to be there, attentive, so the story tells itself — no poses, no repeated hugs, no stealing focus from the moment. I wrote that way of looking at length in my book El Verbo se Hizo Imagen ("The Word Made Image," 2025), where I explore documentary wedding photography as a practice of presence and honesty.

Where I work

Weddings in Guadalajaraand its metro area

Guadalajara is home, and it is where I document most of the weddings I shoot each year. That means I know the city's real timings: how long it actually takes to get from a hair salon in Providencia to a ceremony downtown, when the light starts falling across the stonework of the Templo Expiatorio, and why a Saturday in December around Chapalita does not drive like an ordinary Thursday.

This is not tourist trivia. It decides whether I am inside the room when the door opens for the first time, or whether I miss it because I am still in the car. A photographer who arrives late to the first look cannot ask for it again: in documentary work that moment happened once.

I cover the whole metro area with no travel charge — Guadalajara, Zapopan, Tlaquepaque, Tonalá and Tlajomulco. Travel expenses only apply to destination weddings, so a wedding inside the metro area carries no extra cost for it. You can check that against the wedding photography packages for Guadalajara, which list all three prices and what each one includes.

What a wedding day looks like with me

I arrive early, while nothing is set up yet and the house is still a mess. I stay at the edges of the scene: I do not arrange the family, I do not ask anyone to repeat a hug, I do not interrupt so that someone will look at the camera. If something happens once, my job is to be there when it happens, not to rebuild it afterwards.

At a wedding in Guadalajara that usually means three or four locations in a single day — the getting ready, the church or the civil registry, the session and the reception — with drives in between. I travel in my own car, with my own gear, and I never depend on the wedding planner finding room for me in the van. I wrote about how this works in how I document a wedding without directing the scene, and the logistics questions couples ask me most are answered in the wedding FAQ.

If you want to see the approach across a full city wedding, Laura and Andrew at Casa Pedro Loza, in downtown Guadalajara, is a good portrait of an entire day told without poses.
